Hon. Justice Bamwine (retired Principal Judge) at the Mediation Fortnight
The Commercial Division of the High Court this morning launched its Mediation Fortnight at its premises on Plot 14,Lumumba Avenue, Nakasero, Kampala, with more than 200 cases lined up for resolution over the next two weeks.
Speaking at the launch, HW Zulaika Nanteza, Acting Registrar for Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR), underscored the importance of the initiative in fostering a culture of amicable dispute settlement. "The more we do mediation, the more people will embrace it. Our people want to see to believe," she remarked. She further noted that each round of the Mediation Fortnight provides valuable insights that shape future exercises. "This is the third time we are conducting it here at the Division, and every time we learn new basic practices that help us enhance future settlement fortnights."
HW Jessica Chemeri, Deputy Registrar of the Division, explained that the fortnight is designed not only to ease the backlog of cases but also to strengthen confidence in the justice system. With a target of 200 cases, she shared that 12 mediators have been engaged, including seven judges, one Deputy Registrar, and four court-accredited mediators, among them retired Justices.
Beyond the numbers, the fortnight is intended to showcase mediation as a faster, less adversarial route to justice, enabling parties to resolve disputes amicably, efficiently while reducing costs.
